Breast Implant Options: What You Need to Know

It’s no secret that breast augmentation is one of the most popular plastic surgery procedures performed each year. As technology and techniques advance, there are more and more options available to women looking to augment their breasts. Finding the right type of implant and correct placement for breast implants can be difficult, so here is a look into the options available for patients to discuss at their breast augmentation consultation. Dr. Smith’s expertise will help women arrive at a decision that will provide for the best possible results.

  • Silicone vs. Saline Implants: All breast implants are silicone shells filled with either saline or silicone gel. Both types of implants are widely used and FDA-approved, and they each have their own benefits and limitations. A benefit of saline implants is that in the case of rupture (which is incredibly rare), the saline can be safely absorbed and processed by the body. A limitation to saline-filled implants is that they tend to look less natural in women who are naturally thin and have less existing breast tissue. For the same reason, saline implants may also not be the best choice for someone having breast reconstruction. Silicone-filled implants have a more natural feel and appearance, and are the more favored choice among patients and plastic surgeons.
  • Implant placement under or over the chest muscle: Breast implants can be placed underneath the chest wall muscle or above the chest wall, underneath breast tissue. Generally, the more popular option for breast implant placement is under the chest wall muscle. By doing so, patients are less likely to be exposed to risks of capsular contracture, and experience less interference with mammograms later in life. The benefits of placing breast implants under the chest muscle outweighs its drawbacks, which include surgical drains following the procedure and a lengthier recovery time.
  • Round vs. Teardrop Implants: Implants come in two shapes: round and teardrop. Round implants are the most common, but may not be the right shape for everyone. Round implants provide for the most lift and roundness to the appearance of the breasts. Since round implants are symmetrical on all sides, any risk for the implants rotating and becoming disfigured is completely removed. However, round implants look less natural when compared to teardrop implants. Since teardrop implants are shaped, they have a textured design to help prevent rotation. The natural slope teardrop implants produce fullness in the bottom of the breast, resulting in natural-looking cleavage.
