Understanding the Forehead Lift

A forehead lift, or a brow lift as it is also known, is a cosmetic procedure primarily used to reduce the visible signs of aging from the forehead. Sometimes, it can be use to change inherited facial features as well. Usually, the procedure is conducted together with a face lift to provide a more youthful and even appearance.

What You Have to Know

  • Successful candidates: If you have deep creases on your forehead, frown lines in between your eyebrows or if your eyebrows are sagging, then you are a good candidate for a forehead lift.
  • During the consultation: Your doctor will go through your medical history and perform a physical examination. Your doctor will examine your facial structure and skin quality as well as the appearance and placement of eyebrows and eyelids. You will also discuss expected results.
  • The surgery: Earlier procedures would include a large incision across your forehead. However with recent endoscopic techniques, a few small incisions will be made just behind your hair line on your forehead. The advantage is that it hastens the recovery. It is imperative that you do not smoke for several weeks prior to the surgery in order to help you recover quickly. It is also very important for you to tell your doctor of any medications that you may be taking. The surgery itself will take around two hours. Your surgeon will decide whether a general anesthesia is needed or if an intravenous sedative will be sufficient. After the incisions are made, the muscles and tissue underneath your skin will be altered. Then, sutures, adhesives, screws, and/or surgical tape will be used to close the incisions.
  • Recovery: You can usually go home on the same day; however, your surgeon may, at times, require you to spend the night in the hospital. Swelling will be there after the procedure, though it will reduce in two weeks. Note that swelling and scars can remain for up to six months. For several days after the surgery, heavy lifting and bending should not be done.
