Lip Enhancement Options

For patients who are unhappy or self-conscious about the appearance of their lips, lip augmentation can help restore volume and fullness. This procedure can be performed on the upper lip, the lower lip, or both lips, depending on the patient’s desired look. There are several techniques used by cosmetic surgeons to help patients achieve the full pout they dream of. Depending on the material used, results can be permanent or temporary.

Types of Lip Augmentation

There are two main types of lip enhancement: injectable fillers and implants. There are a wide range of filler materials that can be used to increase the volume of a patient’s lips, including collagen, Restylane and even fat from the patient’s own body. Each material provides its own set of benefits. During the consultation process, your plastic surgeon will determine which material is best for each individual patient.

  • Collagen injections
  • Patient’s own fat from another area of the body
  • Artecoll injections (synthetic material)
  • Autologen injections (patient’s own collagen from another area)
  • Dermalogen injections (donor material)
  • Fascia injections (donor material)
  • Hylaform injections
  • Restylane injections

Lip Enhancement Recovery

While the exact timeline of the recovery process can change depending on the type of material used, most patients can return to work and other daily activities one to two days following the procedure. Mild discomfort and swelling are normal within the first few days, and usually subside on their own. Patients recovering from fat grafting may need more time to heal.

Certain patients may need to follow up with maintenance treatments to keep their lips full of volume. Certain materials, particularly natural injectables, will gradually deplete and require further treatment.
