Rhinoplasty: What to Expect

Rhinoplasty, known colloquially as nose surgery, is one of the most common plastic surgery procedures performed today. During the rhinoplasty procedure, the surgeon works to reshape, reduce or augment a patient’s nose for cosmetic, and sometimes functional, purposes. Rhinoplasty may be performed to correct a birth defect, to repair an injury, to improve breathing or simply to improve a patient’s appearance.

Cosmetic rhinoplasty can improve the appearance of the face by helping to balance proportion between facial features. The width of the bridge of the nose, or the angle of the tip can be altered. Nostrils can be reshaped or made smaller, too! Most patients who undergo rhinoplasty are pleased with the results and report feeling more confident.

Rhinoplasty may be an open or closed operation, depending on what would be more beneficial to the patient. This outpatient procedure is performed under general anesthesia or IV-sedation. Following surgery, it is expected to have some swelling and bruising under the eyes however most patients are back to their normal selves within a week. It is advised that during recovery, patients do not shower or participate in any activity that puts pressure on the nose. Activities that may put pressure on the nose include bending over, rigorously brushing teeth, or wearing glasses. If you intend to go outside, broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher must be worn.

For most patients a rhinoplasty is an uncomplicated procedure with pleasing results. Rhinoplasty can dramatically change your appearance, but it is important to have realistic expectations for your results.

The best candidates for rhinoplasty are at least 13 years old and are in general good health. At age 13, facial features are full grown. Patients considering rhinoplasty should be non-smokers.
