Tummy Tuck vs. Liposuction for Abdominal Contouring

The abdomen is the bane of women and men alike, in shape or out of shape. Why? Pockets of fat on the abdomen can be very resistant to efforts of the owner of said fat to remove it. For some people, no amount of exercise or dietary restraint can get at these stubborn pockets of fat. And loose skin that has been stretched can’t return to its former taut condition.

Two procedures at Smith Plastic Surgery can directly target the abdomen, liposuction and the tummy tuck. Question is, which one is right for you. Here are the scenarios to choose one or the other.

When to opt for liposuction
Liposuction was the most popular cosmetic surgery last year, and it will be again in 2015. Its popularity can be attributed to its wide applicability (it reduces fat in various parts of the body such as the arms and thighs) and the introduction of new techniques has resulted in minimal downtime and has reduced the procedure’s invasiveness.

Generally, liposuction is the ideal body contouring procedure if you are primarily concerned with isolated areas of fat. Liposuction is more effective in patients with good skin elasticity and excellent muscle tone. Dr. Smith employs the tumescent technique or uses ultrasound imaging or laser assisted technique in liposuction. These different techniques either loosen the fat or liquefy it before suctioning it out.

When to Opt for a Tummy Tuck
A tummy tuck will work more effectively than liposuction if your main issue has to do with excess abdominal skin and weakened abdominal muscles. Women following pregnancy or massive weight loss can have abdominal skin and muscles that have lost their elasticity and are permanently stretched. This is where the surgical removal of excess skin and tightening of underlying muscles in a tummy tuck work best. Some tummy tuck procedures also use limited liposuction to remove fat pockets in addition to excess skin.
