Types of Breast Reduction Procedures

A breast reduction is a great option for women who are unhappy with the appearance and/or size of their breasts. This procedure offers many benefits, including the reduction or elimination of back and neck pain, as well as breathing problems. A breast reduction can also improve one’s posture, self-image and self confidence.

There are several types of breast reduction procedures and techniques, which can be determined based on the condition of your breasts and the results that you would like to achieve. Those contemplating undergoing a breast reduction should have realistic expectations in order to be satisfied with the results of their surgery.

A consultation with Dr. Smith will help you get a better idea of what a breast reduction can do for you, and how you get attain the results you want. During your evaluation, Dr. Smith will go over and help determine which procedure will best suite your needs.

Let’s take a look at the three most common techniques for the breast reduction procedure:

Traditional Breast Reduction Surgery

For women with extremely large breasts, traditional breast reduction surgery is the ideal technique. This technique involves an anchor-shaped incision, after which excess skin, fat and tissue are removed from the lower breast. This procedure allows for the nipples and areolas to be repositioned as well, although scarring is usually more apparent with this technique.

Vertical Incision Breast Reduction

This technique is also known as the lollipop technique, as well as the vertical short scar technique. This procedure involves incisions that extend around the areola and continue down to the breast crease, creating the lollipop shape from which it gets its nickname. Vertical incision breast reduction is ideal for women with moderately large breasts who do not require extensive tissue removal. This allows the doctor to create shapelier results with less scarring.

Scarless Breast Reduction

This technique incorporates liposuction as a way of reducing the size of the breasts with little to no scarring. Scarless breast reduction does not change the size of appearance of the nipples and areolas, because it only removes fatty tissue in the breast. Good candidates for this technique should have more fatty tissue than glandular tissue.

Scarless breast reduction is also commonly used as part of a procedure to help men with enlarged breasts, which is a condition known as gynecomastia.
