Lip Augmentation – Frequently Asked Questions

It’s no secret that many people desire fuller lips but unfortunately, not everyone is born with this feature. Luckily, it’s easier than ever to achieve larger and fuller lips through lip augmentation. While not a single procedure, lip augmentation encompasses a number of different techniques designed to help provide patients with full, large and visually-appealing lips. Take a look at some of the most frequently asked questions about lip augmentation and help decide if it’s right for you.

Frequently Asked Questions about Lip Augmentation

  • How is it performed? Lip augmentation can be performed in a number of different ways. Some of the most common techniques include collagen injections, injections that use a patient’s own fat from the body, Artecoll injections, Hylaform injections, Restylane injections and more. As each method has its benefits and drawbacks, you should discuss all options with your surgeon.
  • What can I expect from this procedure? Lip augmentation is an outpatient procedure that typically takes less than an hour to complete. During this procedure, your surgeon will most likely use a topic anesthetic, and proceed to inject the filler or other material directly into the lips. If you’re getting lip implants, these will be inserted into small incisions at the corners of your lips.
  • What is the recovery period like? Following the lip augmentation procedure, patients can expect to experience some mild swelling and discomfort for a few days. Additionally, your lips may appear bigger or “overfilled” initially, but they will shrink as the fillers lose their volume. Patients typically return to work and their daily routines just days after the procedure.
  • Are there any risks? As with any cosmetic procedure, there are some risks involved. However, lip augmentation is considered a safe procedure and complications are rare and usually minimal. Potential complications may include infection, bleeding, numbness, swelling and more.
