What Is Microneedling?
Microneedling is not a new treatment. It uses hundreds of microscopic punctures across the treatment areas to trigger a wound-healing response in the skin. The actual punctures heal in just a couple hours, as the untouched skin surrounding each puncture immediately works to close the adjacent punctures. But the skin thinks there has been a wound, so it responds by creating new amounts of collagen and elastin to heal the perceived damage (although the tiny punctures are healed long before any new collagen is created).
What Does Radiofrequency Energy Add to the Process?
The addition of radiofrequency energy is what makes Morpheus8 a great treatment. When we move the Morpheus8 handpiece across the treatment areas, the microneedles create the punctures described above. But when the needles reach their full depth (which we can vary depending on the location) the tips of the needles deliver a burst of radiofrequency energy. Because of the penetration of the needles, the RF energy is delivered directly into the dermis layer (the skin’s second layer). This eliminates the need for the RF energy to penetrate the epidermis first, so the energy level delivered can be higher.
What does this do? When the RF energy enters the dermis, it converts to heat energy. If the body senses heat in the second layer of the skin it assumes there has been a wound, and it triggers the same wound response detailed above with microneedling. But because the energy is delivered directly into the dermis, this results in greater production levels of new collagen and elastin. These are the two elements of our skin responsible for the firmness, elasticity, and thickness of the skin.
