Back Hair is Scary. Motus AY isn’t.

iStock 674966782 At his Okatie practice, Dr. Smith is always looking to stay at the forefront of new techniques and potential treatments for our patients. We don’t go for all the latest fads that will be big this year and gone next. But when Dr. Smith sees something he feels is worthwhile, he’ll look at bringing it to Smith Plastic Surgery.

Such is the case with the Motus AY laser hair removal platform that he recently added to his practice.

Since unwanted hair can be kind of scary — arm sweaters, upper lip hair, sideburns, and back hair as cases in point — it seems apropos to discuss our new laser in this Halloween blog.

What is Motus AY?

Motus AY is the first, high-speed Alexandrite laser that makes it possible for patients with darker skin tones to benefit from laser hair removal, which is usually difficult for darker skin tones as the laser energy must be downgraded to prevent skin damage. The Motus AY breakthrough is possible because of Moveo technology — a handpiece that delivers fast, more efficient energy to destroy the hair without pain or side effects.

What makes Motus AY different from other lasers for hair removal?

  •     Faster hair removal
  •     Fewer treatments necessary when compared with other laser platforms
  •     Has the ability to treat all skin tones
  •     More comfortable treatments
  •     Can also treat vascular and pigmentation problems

How it works

Laser hair removal with Motus AY works in the same way as other lasers, but it does the work more efficiently and with greater comfort.

We move the Motus AY handpiece across the areas with unwanted hair. The handpiece then delivers laser energy in short bursts onto the hair. The melanin in the hair shafts (which we match with the laser wavelength) absorbs the light energy, which instantly converts to heat. This heat travels down the hair shaft into the hair follicle where it destroys or seriously damages the follicle, precluding it from growing hair in the future.

Laser hair removal only works on hairs that are in the anagen/growth phase of the hair lifecycle. Hair in the catagen/transition and telogen/resting phases are not affected by laser energy, as the body is already in the process of shedding them, so they are longer actively anchored in the follicles. That’s why it takes a series of treatments, usually from three to five with Motus AY, to achieve the permanent hair reduction most patients seek.
