Is a Neck Lift Right for You?

Platysmaplasty, also known as a neck lift, is a procedure that’s becoming increasingly popular among both men and women. The neck lift is an effective way to rejuvenate the neck area’s delicate skin, which often shows signs of aging, including wrinkles, creases, sagging, folds, bands and neck “rings”.

Here are several common questions and concerns that we receive from patients who are considering a neck lift:

  1. Am I a good candidate for the procedure? Those with loose, sagging or excessive skin are good candidates for a platysmaplasty. Patients should be in good physical and emotional health and understand the look that a neck lift can achieve. They should also have realistic expectations about the outcome of their surgery.
  2. Can it be combined with another procedure? Generally, a neck lift consists of a cervicoplasty, which removes excess skin, along with a platysmaplasty, which removes or alters muscles in the neck. However, liposuction can also be performed during the neck lift procedure in order to remove excess fat from the neck area. A neck lift may also be performed in conjunction with a facelift.
  3. Will the results look too obvious? During your consultation, Dr. Smith will go over your expectations for the procedure and discuss what can be done to achieve your desired results. Overall, a neck lift serves to smooth out the skin on the neck and provide a more taut, toned and youthful appearance. While this procedure offers a significant improvement to the appearance of the neck area, it provides subtle changes to overall appearance.  Although you will see and feel the improvement to your neck area, the surgery is discreet enough that your friends and family may not even realize that a surgical procedure was performed.
  4. How long is the recovery period? The recovery and down time following a platysmaplasty typically takes approximately two weeks. Patients will experience some swelling and bruising after the neck lift procedure, which may last up to 10 days. Most patients are able to return to work and other normal daily activities after the bruising and swelling subside, however they are advised to avoid strenuous activities such as exercise for about 4 to 6 weeks.
