Recently the popular aesthetic website RealSelf compiled a list of U.S. cities with the “most plastic surgeons per 100,000 residents.” And at the top of the list was Miami, Florida with 3.90 plastic surgeons for every 100,000 residents. Wow. Looks as if that sunshine, coupled with the glamour of places like South Beach, make it prime terrain for plastic surgery. OK, so Miami isn’t a big surprise.

But in second place you could guess all day and you won’t get it. Wait for it…

Salt Lake City, Utah. What? Who knew all those good Mormons were going around getting nips and tucks? You think Mitt Romney has had gynecomastia reduction surgery? Well, it turns out that living at altitude with lots of UV rays and lots of sunny days every year can beat up on the skin. Also, Utah has the youngest marrying age in the nation, so mothers who are still young want to look young. Hello tummy tuck! Salt Lake has 3.12/100,000.

L.A. comes in third, with 2.98/100,000. It is one of three California cities in the top 10 (alas, your pick of San Diego didn’t make it). The other California cites are San Jose in fourth and San Francisco in sixth. That probably surprises some people.

Now it’s got to be Dallas, right? All of those oil baronesses? No, but the next city is in Texas — Austin. Austin has 2.78 plastic surgeons per 100,000 residents and is fifth.

Now let’s move to the Northeast. New York City comes in eighth with 2.61/100,000.

Now for the real shockers. In seventh? Grand Rapids, Michigan. What? In ninth, Tampa, Florida. And in tenth? How about Baltimore, Maryland to round out the surprises. Baltimore has 2.48 plastic surgeons for every 100,000 people. Must have something to do with perennial disappointment of the Orioles and the associated frown lines!
