Rhinoplasty FAQ

Rhinoplasty, commonly known as a “nose job,” is one of the most popular procedures performed in the United States. Nose surgery is growing increasingly popular among both women and men who are unhappy with the appearance of their nose.

Are you considering getting the procedure or interested in learning more about it? Below are five of the most common questions and concerns regarding rhinoplasty:

What Can Rhinoplasty Fix?
The rhinoplasty procedure can correct various aesthetic as well as structural irregularities, such as a deviated septum. The procedure can slightly or significantly change the nose’s appearance, depending on what the patient would like to improve.

Examples of issues that rhinoplasty can correct include having a “boxy” or drooping nasal tip, changing the bridge of the nose and removing humps or depressions to improve the nasal profile. Rhinoplasty can also narrow or reshape the nostrils, correct asymmetry or deviation and alter the size of the nose with other features to create a better facial balance.

Who Is a Good Candidate for Rhinoplasty?
Candidates for a nose job are those who are in good overall general health and must not currently smoke. The best cosmetic surgery candidates are those who would like to change the appearance of their nose because of personal reasons, and not due to pressure from others. Rhinoplasty candidates must also have realistic goals for the procedure, and be aware of what the surgery can and cannot change.

How Old Do You Have to Be to Undergo Rhinoplasty?
Patients must be at least 13 years old, since facial features can continue to mature into the teenage years. Men and women from all age groups can undergo the rhinoplasty procedure, and a consultation will help to determine if the procedure is right for you.

How Do I Choose a Rhinoplasty Surgeon?
Selecting a skilled, knowledgeable plastic surgeon who is experienced in rhinoplasty is vital to achieving the results you want. It’s important to select a plastic surgeon who is board-certified and properly licensed. The surgeon should address all of your questions and concerns, and go over the procedure with you, including its possible risks. It’s also recommended that you request to see “before and after” photos of his previous rhinoplasty patients, to see examples of the plastic surgeon’s work.
