Top Questions on the Abdominoplasty

A flatter, more toned stomach is something nearly everyone desires, especially after a life-changing event like pregnancy.

As a result, abdominoplasty (better known as a  “tummy tuck”), has become one of the most popular procedures in the country. A tummy tuck removes excess fat and skin from the stomach, shaping and flattening the area. Let’s take a look at the some of the most common questions about abdominoplasty.

  1. Am I a candidate for this surgery? Good candidates for this surgery are healthy, active individuals who want to correct stubborn fat on the stomach that is unresponsive to diet or exercise. Tummy tucks are often performed on women who have stretched, loose skin caused by pregnancy.
  2. How is the tummy tuck performed? During the surgery, the doctor makes two incisions: one from hipbone to hipbone close to the pubic area, and a second near the navel. Skin is then separated from abdominal muscles, which are pulled together and stitched in place for a narrower waist and firmer stomach area. The skin flap is stretched down and over the tightened muscles, and the navel is reattached. Your surgeon will then close the incisions and apply surgical dressings to the affected area. The procedure takes about 2 to 5 hours to complete, and is done under general anesthesia. Like with any surgery, patients may be left with a small scar, which will fade over time.
  3. How long will it take me to recover? Generally, recovery time is two to six weeks, though complete recovery may take a few months. Patients are advised to avoid strenuous activities and exercise for a few weeks following surgery, and to take about a month before returning to work. Although the recovery process can be lengthy, many patients report the process being worthwhile, since it leaves them feeling more confident about their body.
  4. Are the results permanent? Results are not permanent, though they can be maintained for a long period of time with a balanced diet and exercise. Ask your doctor about the tummy tuck procedure to find out if it is right for you!
