Breast Augmentation: 5 Tips to Help You Heal

Life after breast augmentation can be wonderful. Your clothes may fit better and your confidence level can soar. However, the road to recovery immediately following breast surgery can be a little less enjoyable. That’s why it’s important for you to take it easy, get plenty of rest and let your body heal in the right amount of time.

To get you through the recovery period and on your way to the body you’ve always dreamed of, consider the following tips:

Consult your doctor. Breast augmentation surgery is a major decision, and you are likely to have concerns and questions. Talking with your surgeon ahead of time about to discuss any worries you may have can help alleviate any apprehension you are experiencing and better prepare you mentally for what to expect.

Don’t overdo it. Take the necessary time to heal after surgery, which includes resting for the first day or two and curbing your activities for a while. Avoid exercising while you recover, as well as heavy lifting, pushing or pulling with the upper body.

Wear a sports bra. You will be sent home wrapped in surgical dressing after surgery, which can be removed after a few days. At this point, it’s best to avoid wearing an underwire bra and opt for special garments like a soft cup bra or sports bra, wraps, vests or foam garments until you have healed completely. Wires in an underwire bra can irritate breast tissue and keep the implants from settling. Ask your doctor when you can begin to wear an underwire bra again.

Be healthy. As always, it’s best to eat healthy foods and maintain a healthy lifestyle before and after surgery. Smoking is not a good idea while you recover from breast surgery, as it can reduce the amount of oxygen in your blood and impede your ability to heal quickly, so avoid this and other unhealthy behaviors.

Stay elevated. To help enable blood circulation and reduce swelling, rest and sleep on your back in an inclined position. You can prop yourself up using three to four pillows or by sleeping on a recliner. Wedge pillows which are specially designed with an incline are also a comfortable and sturdy solution.
