Recovering Safely From a Tummy Tuck

The decision to undergo abdominoplasty (or tummy tuck surgery) is not to be entered into lightly. After all, the procedure is extensive and the recovery time is several weeks. If you elect to go the tummy tuck route, however, you’ll enjoy a flatter, more toned abdominal area that fits the natural contours of your body. These results will be made even greater when you follow a careful, steady recovery process. Consider the following for successful abdominoplasty recovery:

  • Rest quietly. Especially in the first few days after surgery. You should also avoid taking anti-inflammatory medications (Ibuprofen) or aspirin. Also, refrain from smoking after your procedure to inhibit coughing and bleeding.
  • Wear compression clothing. Your doctor will advise you to wear a compression garment or a bandage with a firm, elastic band to promote proper healing. Be sure to wear your compression garment or bandage as directed in order to curb swelling, reduce the chance of loose or sagging skin, and promote add to a quicker recovery.
  • Get plenty of help. For at least the first couple days after surgery, you will need someone to help you with medication and getting around the house. If you have small children, arrange for someone else to take care of them for the first couple weeks. And heavy lifting post-surgery is off limits for at least four to six weeks.
  • Be aware of “red flags.” If you experience shortness of breath, an irregular heartbeat, or chest pain, these could indicate complications. Also, if you notice an increase in redness, pain, swelling, drainage or bleeding, or if you experience nausea, vomiting, dizziness or fever, call your surgeon immediately.

On average, the total recovery time after abdominoplasty is six months. How well you take care of yourself during the recovery period will determine the end result. While it may seem like an eternity to enjoy the positive outcome of your surgery, just remember that all good things take time.
